Description

Mawsonia was a coelacanth fish of colossal proportions that inhabited the oceans during the Cretaceous period, approximately 110 to 95 million years ago.

Its fossils have been found in sediments in Africa and South America, revealing a giant that could exceed 5 meters in length, being among the largest coelacanths of all time.

This prehistoric fish was distinguished by its robust elongated body, with thick scales, a short and wide snout, lobed fins and a heterocercal caudal fin (that is, composed of two asymmetrical lobes).

Regarding its diet, it is believed that Mawsonia was a voracious predator that fed on smaller fish, crustaceans and other marine animals. Among its main predators were prehistoric sharks, pliosaurs and even Spinosaurus aegyptiacus. To avoid being prey, Mawsonia probably used its size and speed as defense, in addition to camouflaging itself among algae and corals.
